Robert Schmidt-Matt

ROBERT SCHMIDT MATT lives and works in Berlin He is among the major young sculptors who cam into their own after the fall of the Berlin Wall. His work has a monumental quality. He is now devoted to chipping stone and assembling the pieces in the old fashioned way: without mortar. The pieces are fitted together as in the traditional days of cathedral building.
Earlier works were characterized by a playfulness and assemblage of old bricks, metal and cement constructed in metaphoric groupings, gates and towers. Now, the work has taken on a more monumentality. His pieces seem to be models for larger installations. He is sought after by municipalities and private collectors.
Mr. Schmidt-Matt has received the Risch Art Prize, in Munich in l987, the Forderpreis der Prinz-Luitpold-Stiftung, Munich in l988, and has exhibited widely in Germany, Danmark, Sweden and Switzerland. He became the director of the Marburg SommerAkademie in l990 a post he holds to this day.
